Roman
As stars began to punch through the sky, one by one, I stood outside Oliviaâs tent, my head bowed, unable to come up with a way to resolve the tension between us. Onboard the ship, Iâd been under Severusâ thumb and his maniacal thirst for blood. The man was insane. Our every waking hour was spent seeing to his whims, whether in battle or in servitude. Yet, I desperately wanted to check on Olivia and Amara in the few moments I had to myself.
The emperor had other ideas. I was either under his constant scrutiny or being watched by Marcellious. I had no doubt that heâd gleefully tell the emperor Iâd sneaked downstairs if only to rid me from his life once and for all. I couldnât even head downstairs under the guise of needing release with a whore.
Severus had brought several women for his, the officersâ, and the commandersâ enjoyment. But all such congress with his women was to be conducted in the lavish parlor his servants had erected within earshot of his opulent lodgings on the ship.
The emperorâs behavior disgusted me, and I refused to partake in his so-called âgenerosity.â In my mind, it was more of a perversion.
Iâd have moved heaven and earth to see to Oliviaâbut I wanted to keep my own head while on the ship, so I hadnât dared to risk his wrath.
Now, though, when I had access to her, however, limited, she refused to speak to me. How could I expect to command an entire army with so much tension between the woman I loved and me? I was a lovesick fool.
Amara emerged from her and Oliviaâs tent as I turned to head back and see to my quarters. She rushed toward me.
âRoman,â she called.
She gestured for me to lower my head to hers, so I brought my head to her level.
Cupping my ear with her hand, she whispered, âYouâve got to fix your relationship with Olivia. You got yourself into this. I donât know how but Iâm sure it had something to do with your behavior.â
I sighed. âIâve tried. What else can I do? Iâve tried to talk to her multiple times, but she refuses and pushes me away.â
âI donât know what happened, but Olivia is heartbroken. She quietly cried every night onboard the ship. When she slept, sheâd call out your name. Only during her waking hours did I see this stony silence she holds before you. Fix it.â She stood back and glared at me.
âBut how?â I spread my arms wide.
Amara stabbed my chest with her fingertip. âUse your heart. Woo her. Make her feel special. She needs you, Roman, but sheâs too stubborn to let down her guard.â
A weighted silence hung between us. I still didnât know what to do.
Amara huffed out a sigh. âTell you whatâ¦after Olivia and I eat and prepare to retire for the night, you can return and speak to Olivia. Iâll watch for you. You will come and speak with her and make amends.â
A spark of hope bloomed in my heart for the first time in weeks.
